The University of Toronto Shelley Peterson Student Art Exhibition showcases the artistic excellence of undergraduate students in the University of Toronto’s tri-campus visual studies programs. Selected for artistic merit and originality, these works highlight the artists’ diverse and experimental practices. Among the works, various thematic resonances emerge organically. Many use technologies as tools to manipulate the body and confront perceived identities, while others foreground the passing of time and its powerful effect on the self.
The Art Museum at the University of Toronto is pleased to welcome Renée van der Avoird, Associate Curator at the MacLaren Art Centre as a Guest Curatorial Mentor, and Jon Davies, Assistant Curator of Contemporary Art at the Art Gallery of Ontario, as the Juror for the 2016 exhibition.
Featuring work by Ameen Ahmed, Patrick Atienza, Daniel Bernal, Olivia Brouwer, Carol Cheong, Allison Clayton, Rebecca Dedrick, Min Joo “Emily” Jung, Katarina Kaneff, Seo Eun “Sunny” Kim, Charlene Lo, Alvin Luong, Shavon Madden, Matthew Morales, Miyoshi Nagao, Dahyun Nam, Naichen Pan, Maximilian Suillerot, Royce Wei, Shu¬han “Suzanne” Yeh, Audrey Yip, Muzhen “Suzie” Zhang, and Yi Zhang.
The exhibition is located at the Art Museum at the University of Toronto in the Art Lounge and Delta Gamma gallery. The Art Museum is composed of the two distinguished art galleries, the Justina M. Barnicke Gallery and the University of Toronto Art Centre. Together, the two galleries now comprise one of the largest university-based art museums in the country, and the second-largest, museum-standard visual art museum and collection in the city of Toronto.

Planning the Shelley Peterson Student Art Exhibition (SPSAE) project began in September 2015. The planning and research process took six and a half months. In November, we began promoting the call for submissions, and by the end of January, we had conducted studio visits, closed the call, and selected the artworks. By the beginning of March, we had collected and received our loaned objects and edited and printed our interpretive and promotional materials. Installation took three and a half working days from March 14 – 17, 2016. The exhibition opened on March 18, 2016 and will close on April 9, 2016.
