The Doris McCarthy Gallery (DMG) at University of Toronto Scarborough (UTSC) holds a special relationship with celebrated Canadian artist Doris McCarthy that goes beyond their namesake. Holding an extensive collection of McCarthy’s artwork as well as her personal belongings, the DMG will host a symposium celebrating and exploring the life of the artist in November 2018. McCarthy forged an independent life for herself, valuing above all the principles of education and mentorship. Her one hundred years were filled with travel and adventure, themes which are evident in her artworks. In order to appreciate and unpack her full life, the Doris McCarthy Gallery would like to invite academics and artists from a wide range of disciplines to speak about her life’s work and how her legacy has impacted the contemporary art world and beyond.
